Stockyards: (Satellite, the land between Genessee Street and the river.)

| Mary Rose posted Kansas City Stockyards. 2/3's in Kansas; 1/3 in Missouri. Opened in 1871; closed in 1991. I went there many times with my dad. Randy Wiechman: Up until about 1970, a majority of beef processing was done in a handful of cities, Chicago, KC, Omaha, Fort Worth, and a few others. Then, the beef processing industry became less concentrated, with dozens of facilities popping up near the giant feedlots that started up across the Great Plains and Midwest. Hog processing followed a similar pattern. Gary Gottschalk: During the early 1960’s we were on our way for a special family outing to enjoy the buffet at the Golden Ox. Our route took us past the stockyards which were well known for their pungent aroma. As we drove through my brother couldn’t take it anymore and cried out “This stinks, roll down the (car) window and let some fresh air in. 😂 Barney Barnhart: Gary Gottschalk It was the packing houses , not the kcsy that stunk |
It is easy to identify the exchange building because it is the "backwards E" near the middle of this aerial. And because it is tall and casts the longest shadow.

Was the facility along the river in the above aerial the packing houses? It is still, literally, brownland.

It was down by Union Station and there were a lot of railroads in the area. The pens were the white space west of the "backwards E shaped" building.
