Smithshire, IL: CGB Elevator including Wood Grain Elevator

(Satellite)

Note the wood grain elevator peeking over the roof of the scale house.

The old elevator is skunked by the locomotive in this photo.

You can tell that Santa Fe was one of the later railroads built in Illinois because a highway does not parallel it, and the towns have remained small. I'm so glad that a street view driver finally cruised this town.

I'm surprised that Consolidated Grain & Barge (CGB) owns such a small elevator. They normally own big barge served, or at least railroad served, elevators. The depot was probably on the north side of the tracks because that is where the grain elevator was and because the street grid parallels the railroad. The south part of town was added later since the street grid has the normal orientation.

I noticed seven round slab foundations. Since they are of different sizes, I presume they are left over from bin removal rather than new construction in progress.

I fired up Google Earth, and this image confirms that they were bins. The bins appear to be gone in the next image, Aug 2006.
