Berea, OH: CP194/BE Tower: NS+Amtrak/NYC/LS&MS vs. CSX/NYC/Big4 and Depot

Berea Tower (BE) located at CP 194 on the NS Chicago subdivision in Berea, Ohio. Closed and decommissioned in 1999, this tower controlled the signals and interlocking between what was then the B&O (previously the Big Four Railroad) and the C&O (now CSX). This is one of only 2 towers left in the Cleveland area, the other being Drawbridge Tower (DB) over the Cuyahoga River in the industrial flats.
[According to some comments, B&O didn't get the route. CSX got it as part of the split up of Conrail. And some think the QD tower in Collinwood may still be standing.]

The northern tracks are NS+Amtrak/LS&MS and the southern tracks are CSX/Big Four. But east of this junction, CSX has trackage rights on NS and NS has trackage rights on CSX. Thus this control point is now crossovers between the north and south tracks.

The old cantilever tower had some character.

August 31st's Flickr photo...Conrail SD60 6864 west on the old LS&MS, notches them up after being delayed at busy Berea (Ohio) tower for a conflicting move on the Big Four. I tried to squeeze in the old Berea Union station to the far right of the frame as best I could. Berea was a long time hold out on old NYC and, because of its strategic location, outlasted most of them on the main line. July, 1991

While trying to confirm that the angle of the turnouts is low so that they can handle higher speeds, I noticed the satellite caught trains on both routes. That is a good indicator that these routes are probably rather busy.

Hagan Meinke posted four photos with the comment: "BE tower at various times of this year."
Hagan Meinke: And wheeling and Lake Erie has trackage rights.
Charlie DeWeese: In my brief tenure on the NYC, 1959-1963, BE was pure NYC. I worked at MY at Avon when the yard opened in 1960, and was told that the operator's rate at MY was the highest on the Big Four, equal to the rates at BE and B tower at Elkhart.
Cameron Keske: Really makes me sad how the tower is falling apart.

Unfortunately, the dining area expansion masks much of the depot, so I tried for a trackside view. But that side is dominated by railroad and industrial property so this is the best I could find.
