Today’s featured depot is the Ypsilanti Depot 🚂
Ypsilanti, located in eastern Washtenaw County along the Huron River, was settled about 1824 as a trading post.
The depot sat along the Michigan Central Railroad main line running between Detroit and Chicago, about eight miles east of Ann Arbor. Its location on this major corridor positioned Ypsilanti as an important stop between two of the Midwest’s largest cities.
In addition to the Michigan Central, Ypsilanti was also served by the Detroit, Hillsdale & Southwestern Railroad, which operated between Ypsilanti and Bankers (near Hillsdale), as well as an interurban railroad line that further connected the city to surrounding communities.
The Ypsilanti depot served as a passenger and freight station, supporting both local travel and commercial shipping during the height of Michigan’s railroad era.
Jon Zavrel: It’s currently [Feb 2026] for sale FYI

The current tower was obviously just a grade crossing tower. I wonder what the original tower controlled.

The tower we see today on the depot was added a while ago.

The building to the left of the steam locomotive was the freight house.

In addition to preserving their Michigan Central depot and freight house, Ypsilanti parked a caboose in their historic district before they removed the team tracks.

Nolan Skip Raspbury LaFramboise II: the passenger station is privately owned. As great as the surrounding neighborhood is, there are many unhappy residents and businesses with the status of the depot building. I've heard there's great desire and plans to renovate the depot as an Amtrak stop. How that works through private ownership is the question.
