Chicago, IL: Derby Foods (Peter Pan Peanut Butter)

(Satellite)

I continue to be amazed by how much food used to be processed in Chicago. I used the "confection" label instead of "manufacture" because most peanut butter has so much sugar that it is almost a candy.

From at least the early 1940s onward into the 1980s, Derby Foods, Inc. operated a large factory in Brighton Park at 3327 W. 47th Place, which produced Peter Pan products along with Derby Tamales and some other goods. The building is still standing and looks like it could be yours for the right price!
Visit this very interesting web site to see the history of this building and the wonderful products it made. I've heard a few interesting stories from exemployes, some great, some not so great about the process of making Peter Pan Peanut Butter
[According to some comments, the tamales used to come in a can. Con Agra still makes Peter Pan, but they quit making the tamales. But I have no idea where Peter Pan is made today.]

The east/west tracks used to be two railroads. The northern one, which served these industries, was the Chicago River & Indiana, which became the IHB. The southern one was GTW. The GTW route was also the original route to the loop for the Santa Fe. Looking at a satellite image, you can still see a bunch of curves on the north side of the tracks where industrial spurs served many of the buildings between the tracks and 47th Street.
