Dennis DeBruler commented on Neil's post This yard is not on a 1958 map, but this 1938 map shows how they squeezed it in around the bluffs. 1938 New London Quadrangle @ 1:31,680 Niel Fenn Davis: Dennis DeBruler because by 1958 it was closed, during the first bankruptcy in the 40s operations were consolidated for maximum economic gain , this and many other yards were cut along with many low revenue pay lines, with diesel locomotives taking over and the NYNH&H Railroad adopted to diesel locomotives early there was no need for as many major maintenance facilities, and when McGinnis took over he cut all maintenance budgets to a minimum, they call it deferred maintenance, this is partly a factor leading to the NYNH&H Railroad 2nd and final bankruptcy leading to its demise |
