Raymond Storey posted BARNESVILLE OHIO |
1 of 4 photos posted by Bridges & Tunnels Barnesville Tunnel was central to the Central Ohio Railway's efforts to build a line between Columbus and Bellaire, Ohio. Work was slow because of the rugged terrain which required the building of six tunnels and 12 large bridges between Zanesville and Bellaire, but the new 423-foot tunnel under Barnesville was completed in 1854 (although another source has it at 1870). The tunnel was later owned by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad until 1983 when the line was mostly abandoned. ➤ Learn more about the Barnesville Tunnel at http://bridgestunnels.com/location/barnesville-tunnel/ ➤ Learn more about the Central Ohio Railway at https://abandonedonline.net/location/central-ohio-railway/ |

I include the above photo from the web page because you can see the depot in the background.

The red line shows where today's tunnel is. I included the scale to show that it is not 423' long. So I spent some time looking for another tunnel. But when I saw the above photo with the depot in the background, I knew this was the correct tunnel. I presume the yellow lines were part of the original tunnel, but then it was daylighted.

The ends of the tunnel were daylighted by 1961. Note that some industries on the Northeast and Southwest sides of town were rail served.
