Chaska, TN: L&N Coaling Tower is Still Standing

(Satellite)

Barry Delaney posted
This old coaling tower still stands in Chaska, Tennessee on the former L&N main to Knoxville.

Ed Housley: Nice Photo. I worked the hillhelper service there for years and ran a gazillion trains thru there both north and south. By the time you get to this point going south you are really pulling hard trying to get your train past the north end so the hillhelper could come out and get on the rear to shove you up the mountain.
Stanley Turnmire: hard to tell, is the engine track still there? Know they moved the crew shack after moving helper to Morley. Haven’t been by there since early 2012.
Jay Holland: Very close match to the one in Camak, GA on the former Georgia RR.

At first, I thought the siding had been torn up. But then I saw it peaking through the trees on the east side of the RoW.

I zoomed out to get a better feel for what L&N was doing here. L&N has a north/south route through here. But it looks like Southern beat them to the better route between Vasper and Jellico along Core Creek and Elk Valley. And there are quite a few tipples marked along Core Creek. But Southern did not go north of Jellico. It went east to Fonde. And it shared that route with L&N. According to my 2004 SPV Map, NS and CSX share the Southern route to Fonde.
