While the town celebrates its 100th anniversary, the classic Mediterranean-style depot is on the brink of demolition. I visited the depot today and met the current owner, Bill Odrey, who is hoping to raise money before an Oct 30 deadline to make mandated repairs, as the property is being highly sought after by condo developers. The depot is the southernmost on the former ACL system, which had service into the late 1950's, after which it was enlarged and used as various restaurants. It was also featured in the 1957 motion picture 'Wind Across The Everglades'. For more info, visit the web site

You can tell the everglades is a wilderness because the oldest, in fact only, detailed topo map is 1975. And it has no trace of the ACL railroad.

Donald Traser commented on the safe_image A very early view of Everglades City. This can't be too long after the 1928 construction. |
