Sacramento, CA: Southern Pacific Backshop, California State Railroad Museum and Amtrak Depot

Museum: (Satellite)

The Southern Pacific shops at Sacramento were another of the "legendary" railroad sites, known for manufacturing many high quality locomotives over a period of decades. This is a view of the machine shop around 1895. At this time the machinery was driven by belts and shafting from the central powerhouse. (California State Railroad Museum Library and Archives)

Douglas Lowing: Great photo. Where is the entrance to the turntable, through the long building, through an engine stall, or between the buildings?

Albert Vogel: At one point in time this was one of the largest industrial complexes W of Miss River.
Colin Henderson: Was there a transfer table between the shops to the right of the turntable? Looks like that's the only way....?
Robert Schell: Colin Henderson yes
Michael Shaun Morris: Are they gonna tear it all down?
John Lira: Michael Shaun Morris everything that hasn't been torn down already is staying.

Richard Shulby answered Douglas' question
Primary access was through the gap on the near side of the roundhouse, although there was also later access through the rear of the first 3 stalls to the left of that per the attached 1915 Sanborn map..

Dave Kuntz Drone Photos posted four photos with the comment: "Southern Pacific Sacramento Locomotive Works in California, which has an unused turntable in the back that is no longer connected to any tracks, having been severed around 2010.  Also note the special guest in the top right corner of the top photo.  For extra extra credit, there's a super long transfer table as well with the bridge shown in the last photo."
Jim Ransom: There is a youtube that shows overflow equipment from the rail museum in the buildings. I can’t remember where I heard it but it is all slated to be torn down. This is where the SP cab forwards lived. Cab forwards were built to keep the crew ahead of the exhaust in the many Donner Pass tunnels.
Steven Pracy: Should expand the railway museum into a real railway environment and utilise these shops. What better way than to promote the site than to have a loco going for a ride around the 'table regularly.
James Hollenback: Steven Pracy the first building is the old boiler shop, and the building with the two roofs is the erecting shop. Both buildings are used by the California State Railroad Museum for maintenance of the excursion train, restoration and storage. The transfer table was built from 2001-2003 to replace the old one from the Southern Pacific days, which had eventually disassembled itself. That table is used almost daily. The Museum does have something of a vision of incorporating the shops into its interpretive role.
Gorm Thorofsen: James Hollenback great to hear this information. This old area could be a very lucrative backdrop for many things. We visited the Bethlehem Steel Plant in PA and they have turned it into an event center that does music events and festivals and all kinds of 'revenue building' applications for the public to experience the old buildings and areas around the mill. This could be the same with some "VISION".
Brian Aunger: Gorm Thorofsen I think the “vision” is to maintain both the structures AND the historical use as a maintenance shop for the museum’s collection.
These buildings are all that remains of one of the earliest industrial sites in California and was pivotal to establishing cross continent commerce. The second floor of the museum has a great display describing what was built in these shops. An opportunity to view the display and then tour the actual location would be a fitting and complete tribute to the industrial history of California that would inspire vision of what productive industry looks like.
There are plenty of event venues in California Gorm; these buildings are the last of a unique historical site and of an irreplaceable function.
We best value it for what it is Gorm.

I think Amtrak uses Western Pacific tracks from Denver, but it appears that they use the Southern Pacific depot.
1948 Sacrament West and 1949 Sacramento East Quads @ 24,000

The depot is on the left and the platforms are on the right next to the backshops. It appears the passengers have to walk a ways to get to the train. At least they have a covered walkway most of the way.

Amtrak tore out the original loading tracks and moved the platforms to the mainline.
