Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Someone wanted to see a photo of the C&NW depot in Rolfe, Iowa. Here is one from the archives of the C&NW Historical Society archives. Rolfe is located at the junction of two lines, one of which came from near Fort Dodge and wandered up toward Minneapolis. The other ran from Eagle Grove west to Alton, Iowa and beyond. Rolfe itself is located a few stops northwest of both Fort Dodge and Eagle Grove. |

I had a choice between a 1950 photo of low resolution and a 1974 photo with high resolution. I started with the 1950 photo because I was confident that the depot would still be there. This shows the depot was a little west of the map's mark on the topo map. Specifically, it is in the middle of the block opposite of an alley.

I also got the 1974 photo to see if the depot was still standing. I don't think it is the same building because it is east of the alley. This photo is when I noticed the towns grain elevator was along the route to the north. And all of the concrete silos that we see today were built since 1974.

The depot would have been to the right of the garage building and microwave tower. I included the building in the left background to show the importance of dry fertilizer and the tanks in the right background to show the importance of liquid fertilizer.

Note the wet and dry tanks along the building on the right. This is another reminder as to how important a variety of chemicals have become for American farmers. I don't know what combination of plant nutrients and "cides" (herbicide, pesticide and fungicide) those tanks are storing.

But I could not find a fall protector for the grain elevator. It is interesting that they expanded the elevators capacity with a permanent infrastructure for a big ground pile rather than with steel bins. We get another view of the small tanks and bins in the right background.

I did find a long fall protector over by the "misc. chemicals" building. I have no idea what is done here.
