Leesburg, VA: Restaurants/Southern Depot

(Satellite)

My 2004 SPV Map shows that the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad became part of the Southern Railroad.

Street View, Nov 2024

RE Pearce posted four photos with the comment: "Market Station is a historic mixed-use development in downtown Leesburg, Virginia, located at 203 Harrison Street SE.  In the mid-1980s, the site underwent significant revitalization, transforming the dilapidated mills into a cohesive commercial complex. This included restoring seven historic buildings, one of which was the former railroad station (reflecting Leesburg's rail history). The station was built as part of the Alexandria, Loudoun & Hampshire Railroad (later the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad). It opened on May 17, 1860, marking the arrival of rail service to the town and fulfilling long-standing local aspirations for improved transportation and economic growth. The station handled passengers, freight, and telegraph operations, with stationmasters managing daily activities like ticketing and signaling for train arrivals."

At first, I thought the depot was moved because the railroad (today's Washington and Old Dominion Trail) was a couple of blocks south of the depot's location.

The depot appears to be on an industrial spur that served the mill. That means the passenger trains would have to do a backing maneuver to access the depot. The wye down by the mainline and the spur into the town is the type of detail that is normally shown on a 1:24,000 scale topo map.

The Tuscarora Mill Restaurant preserved some of the line shaft equipment, including some belts.
Note the old electric motor on the right side.
