US-66 Overview
Route 66 used to go through this town.

Just west of Newburg is the small town along the Gasconade called Arlington.Tracks were laid to Arlington in 1866. The Frisco did a great job promoting hunting, fishing, boating, and camping in the area.At the turn of the century, you could take the Frisco from Union Station to enjoy the great outdoors at Arlington for $5.00 a person. You could stay at the Gasconade Inn for $1.25 a day or $5.00 a week.Mr. L.F. Pillman ran the Inn and provided a nice meal. He also had a general store connected which could outfit you with everything you need to enjoy the area— boats, tents, fishing tackle, guides, etc.And when you were done, you waited for the next train to take you back home.Photo 1) The little Frisco Depot at Arlington, Mo, circa 1950Photo 2) The Gasconade Inn General Store and Train Stop, around 1890Photo 3) Ladies enjoying one of Mr. Pillman's boats on the Gasconade— next to the Frisco Railroad Bridge.Photo 4) Frisco Bridge over the Gasconade

A general store is about the only thing left of the town.

Of course, US-66 is now routed on I-44. But we can still find remnants of the original US-66.
