Detroit, MI: (Actually, Melvindale, MI:) NS/Wabash Oakwood Yard

(Satellite)

I saved a closeup of the satellite image because a railyard that is heavily used is becoming more and more rare in the 21st Century. There is still some heavy industry just east of this yard.

Sometimes the clouds aren’t always bad. This particular instance I found a spot of sun between the clouds at oakwood and I think it looks neat.
James Byberg: well I'll be dammed... they actually use the engine house.

Snake in the yard.
NS 256 with the triple crown trailers in tow snakes through Oakwood. The triple crown unloaded facility is on the eastern end of the yard.
This was last fall 2021.
Garry Mccallum: surprised they still use the roadrailer we had one 144 &145 we were told the bogies were too old so they did away with the roadrailer trains they came and went to oakwood yard.
Craig Hensley Photography: Garry Mccallum yeah it’s the only one remaining. Who knows how long it will be in service.
Larry Willis Jr.: Garry Mccallum that's what has happened, the equipment is getting so old and they don't want to invest in new trailers and boggies that they eliminated all service and only run 1 train each way from KC to Oakwood. Eventually it will go away when things wear out.

A pair of CP units with a short cut of mixed freight work their way towards the east end of Oakwood yard. In the foreground a line of roadrailers wait to be unloaded at the Triplecrown facility to the right. In the background you can see the fuel pad with the nose of a UP motor sticking out.

CP230 and NS 333 briefly parallel eachother as they both run out of the east end of Oakwood yard. Melvindale, MI - August 2024 Christopher Stephans: Is that yard off to the left for auto rack loading storage repairs or some combination thereof? Craig Hensley Photography: Christopher Stephans yeah, it’s a auto transfer yard

  1. Dennis, if you get a chance, take a look at Rockport Yard in Cleveland. It was originally built by New York Central as between point north of Berea, OH. Mixing freight between NYC and Big Four. Then Penn Central and now for NS with CSX access on the east end.
