Larry Miller III posted The Burlington turntable and roundhouse just north of Cedar Street bridge. |
Dennis DeBruler commented on Larry's post On the left side of the photo we can see the spur that crossed Washington Street to provide access to the Alley Track. I was shocked to see that the tracks are still in the street. At least they have removed the crossing gates so that tanker trucks don't have to stop for the crossing. The roundhouse area is now a big glob of trees. It appears that Cast Technologies built around it. |
Dennis DeBruler commented on Larry's post One advantage of roundhouses is that the topo cartographers are pretty good about recording them on the maps. The railroad scene on the riverfront appears to have lasted until 1979. But that is because it takes time for changes to show up in the maps. David Jordan has made the comment: "The current post office opened in 1980, and land for it had been acquired in February 1977."1979 Peoria East Quadrangle @ 1:24,000 |
Dennis DeBruler commented on Larry's post This is a comparable excerpt from a 1939 aerial photo. I was surprised that I could not see the train shed of the 1882 Union Station. Then I learned that a train wreck destroyed it on Oct 22, 1927. |
