Peoria, IL: CB&Q Roundhouse and Depot

Roundhouse: (Satellite, it looks like Cast Technologies built around the old roundhouse)
Depot: (Satellite)

On the left side of the photo we can see the spur that crossed Washington Street to provide access to the Alley Track. I was shocked to see that the tracks are still in the street. At least they have removed the crossing gates so that tanker trucks don't have to stop for the crossing. The roundhouse area is now a big glob of trees. It appears that Cast Technologies built around it.

One advantage of roundhouses is that the topo cartographers are pretty good about recording them on the maps. The railroad scene on the riverfront appears to have lasted until 1979. But that is because it takes time for changes to show up in the maps.

This is a comparable excerpt from a 1939 aerial photo. I was surprised that I could not see the train shed of the 1882 Union Station. Then I learned that a train wreck destroyed it on Oct 22, 1927.

Jon W Walker: Just a thought. Is that the Tire Plaza building behind the station? [He is referring to the white building in the right background of the photos. That building is extant.]
David Jordan: The CB&Q built this in 1952 so it could vacate P&PU's Union Depot. Galesburg-Peoria motor trains used it from June 1, 1952 through June 30, 1960.

It looks like this slab was the foundation of the depot, https://maps.app.goo.gl/xE5QxUcqnCDZdzaj9.
