Pudtra Sanjaya posted Canton Ohio, McKinley Tower. B&O 6652. Dated January 1973. Slide credit - James Marcus. Tim Shanahan shared Chad Winans: Canton Turn. Called out of Akron Jct at 0800 M-F. It turned at Mineral City where the tank cars were loaded with crude oil on the Huff Run Branch. Somewhere around 1980, the tank farm was moved to Sandyville, and the line was shortened. Tom Barnett: Westbounds out of Alliance on track 2, would be put down old number 4 at Fairhope to work Five Yard at Canton, via old Stark. Once their set off and pick up was made at Five Yard, they would get permission to head west on 4 track and the dispatcher would tell McKinley to put him back over to track 2 at McKinley, to continue on west to Crestline. McKinley was a rough interlocking to maintain track surface and switches, as it had 3 street crossings in it. The plan was always to streamline and rationalize the interlocking plant as too difficult and expensive to maintain. McKinley tower also controlled Reed Interlocking, about 1 mile to the west. photo above shows the B&O Akron-Magnolia local southbound crossing over, heading down to work the oil loading rack at Lindentree just below Magnolia. The oil rack was moved up to Sandyville few years back, and the oil business still exists today and, whst remains of the branch is served by W&LE. All that is left today at McKinley is one hand thrown switch, off of main 2, for W&LE, to go north towards North Canton to work a couple patrons, once or twice a week. Robert Mani: below the diamond they serviced Luntz Scrap Metal, Republic Steel on the west side of Cleveland Avenue and interchanged with the Timken Steel and Roller Bearing plants. Timken had their own railroad. They painted the engines orange. Tom Barnett: Robert Mani the B&O had an industrial spur and did some street running eastward over into, can’t think name of plant, over towards Cherry Ave. Last used it around 1977. |

The tower was in the northwest quadrant. It looks like the B&O industrial spur did street running in today's 490.
