SP Crossing the Steel Bridge in Portland, OR -- 11 Photo Sequence
On June 20, 1993 I took this sequence of photos of a Southern Pacific freight coming through Union Station then crossing the Steel Bridge in Portland, OR. The map at the end shows the camera positions.
The power consist was 4302 (SD9), 4434 (SD9), 3873 (GP9), 3846 (GP9), and 4382 (SD9).

Richard Biegaj posted two photos with the comment: "Portland Union Station -Portland, Oregon.  Opened in 1896. Currently used by Amtrak.  Immediately prior to Amtrak, it was used by UP, BN and SP"
George Alderson: Around 1948-1963 when I was riding, the SP&S also used this station. SP&S trains ran west to Astoria and east to Pasco.
Richard Biegaj: George Alderson SP&S was merged into the BN in March 1970.

Not only has the building been preserved, it evidently still functions as a train station instead of an event facility.

Of course, the supporting coach yard is all gone.

I included the UP roundhouse near the top of this excerpt. It was in the southern end of the UP Albina Yard. The roundhouse area is still an engine servicing facility. As expected, it has been converted to servicing diesel instead of steam locomotives. But UP retained what I presume was the smokestack of the roundhouse!

UP recognized its value as a very fancy sign.

This is the first yard that I can remember that has more tracks today than it did in 1954.
