Duluth, MN: (Ceres Global+Riverland B1)/Cargill/Consolidated Grain Elevators on Rice's Point

These are two of the grain elevators on Rice's Point.

The then-new Cargill facility in Duluth as viewed on August 8, 1977. Note all the grain trucks, a once-common sight in the Twin Ports before railroads took over most of that business. I still see trucks at Gavilon. Also note salties are loading at B1 and B2 with an excursion boat getting a close look at B2. For our railroad fans there is a yellow GE 44 tonner employed by the elevator. Basgen Photography

The left side of this photo shows the Consolidated Grain Elevator that was on the east side of this dock in 1915. The elevator on the right is an earlier version of Duluth Lake Port Storage.

A comment by Eric Holst on this post explained that Ceres Global Ag/Riverland Ag took over operation in 2011 from the hedge fund that bought it from Cargill in 2008.

A Friday Flashback from the Basgen files. Medium format color transparency showing three silver stackers in layup and the modern Cargill facility under construction (that leads me to believe this was photographed in fall 1976). The lakers, from what I can make out using a 10x loop, are the Thomas F. Cole (1907), Peter A. B. Widener (1906) and the Alva C. Dinkey (1909). Basgen Photography

This elevator was built in 1919 to replace a wooden Elevator "I" when it burnt. The wooden elevator was built "in 1886 and held an impressive 1.75 million bushels in its 80-foot high bins." [substreet]

This is the post that first allowed me to locate this elevator complex. The cranes on the ship indicate that it is a general purpose cargo ship, so it is a salty. It probably imported products that were too big to fit in a container, and then it returns with grain in its hold.

Picked this postcard up at an estate sale last weekend, any guesses on ship? I was after some Fitgerald pictures but they were gone when I arrived.
Richard Jenkins: Nipigon Bay.
Dusty Bjornstad: Photo credit goes to Tim Algire on this postcard, most cards just have the company.
Dave Wagner: Tanker converted, could be Nipigon bay.

"With 12 million bushels of grain storage capacity, the Duluth storage facility can handle 110 car trains, trucks and up to two lake or ocean vessels at a time. The facility is one of the largest and most efficient facilities on the Great Lakes."
James Torgeson: Dennis DeBruler I took a tour bus around the property in 2006…
Brett Ellis: Dennis DeBruler they always did handle trucks previously.

It appears that the hatches are open for two of the six cargo bays.

Manitoulin last did that run in 2017. 9/28/2017
[It is unusual for a ship to unload at Superior grain elevator. Normally they load ships for export. This post started an interesting discussion about unloading when it noted that the Saginaw is coming with a load from Thunder Bay.]

With the upcoming delivery of grain by the Saginaw at Riverland in Duluth sometime this upcoming weekend (subject to change), I'll post this flashback of the long gone Halifax back in 1993 when Cargill owned the facility.
Vic Silen: I guess what I'm getting at is the drought in the west has impacted the amount of feed grown for livestock so the farmers are importing feed through the ports from other areas that have a surplus. At least that's what the situation was here in Canada.
Tom Anderson: There’s a great documentary called “Working Waterfront: A Harbor Portrait” about the Port of Duluth. Shot I think in 1997 they spent two weeks filming all port activities. One of the many vessels they board is the Halifax as they unload grain, clean the holds and transfer under the chutes to take on a load of pellets. Really great watch.
David Schauer: Tom Anderson That is an outstanding program put together by our local PBS station WDSE. They also did a companion one for railroads - both excellent and I have copies here.

One of five photos posted by David Schauer.
A few shots for tug fans as North Carolina and Arkansas assisted Saginaw on its recent trip to Duluth. 12/4-12/5.
[A comment on another photo indicated the tugs were used because the bow thrusters were not working.]

Unloading through the storm:
Saginaw continues to unload grain at Riverland Ag through today's snowstorm. After she unloads, she's set to make a trip up to Two Harbors to load iron ore pellets. So far snow amount is lower than what was forecasted here in Duluth. However, it's not over yet as winds are picking up and continuing through tomorrow.

[They have yet to put the unloading boom into the hopper in this photo.]

What is likely our last ocean vessel of the season, the Maria G, arrived near sunset with an assist from tugs Arkansas and Missouri. There was a bit of color upon her arrival as she headed for CHS1 in Superior for grain. Note Drawsko finishing up its grain load at Riverland AG in the distance.

This photo features the General Mills A Grain Elevator, but I include it here because it catches the corner of the Cargill elevator showing it busy with trucks, trains and a ship.

Steve Miller: Is that General Mills elevator still active?
David Schauer: Steve Miller No, dormant for the past few years. Was handling beet pulp but that shifted to Gavilon. Last boat loaded on 12/10/2013.
Al Miller: Love the Kinsman boats and those Northern Pacific boxcars.
David Schauer: Indeed, back when some grain still moved in boxcars.
[Some comments identify the boats: It's the Frank R. Denton at General Mills with the Merle M. McCurdy to the right. The other vessel in the picture is the Canadian vessel called the Lake Nipigon.]

David schauer posted three photos with the comment: "Somewhat overshadowed by the arrival of the Mark W. Barker on its first voyage after christening was the maiden voyage of the new ocean vessel Verila, a 623-foot ship built this year and operated by Navibulgar (Bulgarian Maritime Navigation Company). Verila loaded at the Riverland AG elevator in Duluth and departed on September 8, 2022, with wheat for Italy."

A 1962 view of the Cargill elevators in Duluth. In the mid-1970s Cargill built a larger grain terminal here with a portion of this complex used and referred to as B2 (Berth 2). It is also amazing how many coal docks populated the Duluth-Superior waterfront for inbound eastern coal. When MERC's SMET facility was built about the same time as Cargill's new elevators it soon surpassed the yearly tonnage record of all the eastern coal docks combined, in this case moving lower sulphur western coal to power plants.

This view shows that Cargill built their new B1 on the former coal dock, tore down the wooden elevator and connected B1 and B2.

The first arrival of an ocean vessel (saltie) for the 2024 season was the Barbro G, shown here at Riverland AG shortly after arriving. The elevator had their ex-MKT SW1200 out moving cars around. The Barbro G will load wheat for Algeria. Duluth, MN - April 1, 2024

Another view of that salty.

We caught a break in the clouds yesterday afternoon as the Barbro G tied up at Riverland AG while the Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader departed for Silver Bay. Duluth, MN - April 1, 2024
[I wish he caught it while it was actively loaded. I think the ships cranes would all be swung over to its starboard side. And the dock would have a conveyor extended over the ship.]

Bonus: the salty coming into town because this post has some info on the ship.

Portuguese flagged, 623-foot long Barbro G. (2010) is Duluth-Superior's first salty for the 2024 shipping season! They came in yesterday to load wheat at Riverland Ag. They originally unloaded a cargo at Sorel, QC from Egypt before coming to Duluth (April 1st, 2024).
Mary Kiefer Carter: Does anyone know what they unloaded?
Scott Bjorklund: Mary Kiefer Carter unloaded steel products from Turkey and Egypt at sorel before coming here
