Rodney A. Aho posted two photos with the comment: "Standing along Tower Avenue in Superior, WI, in June 1965, I photographed the Farmers Union Grain Elevator, at the time purported to be (and perhaps still considered) the largest grain terminal in the world. It is situated along Hughitt Slip on St. Louis Bay at the western end of Lake Superior. These enormous elevators are easily visible from the John A. Blatnik Bridge (visible at far left) when heading north on Highway 53 toward Duluth, MN. I’ve also posted a comparison Google Street view taken in 2023."

Very cool shot. Wonder how often she did this
Eric Holst: Brett Miller Courtney Burton/American Fortitude handled the majority if not all of the old Kinsman contract for Duluth-Superior to Buffalo wheat cargoes for ON/ASC in 2005 - 2006. If memory serves, I think in 2007 ASC started using the Adam E. Cornelius (now Agoma Compass) for that run more often, but the Fortitude (ex Burton) still made one or two late-season runs in Dec/Jan '07 carrying wheat to Buffalo as an extra / second ship helping stockpile product for the winter.

Given the bridge in the background and the shape of the elevator, this would be in the Hughitt Slip.

A friend of mine noted that they lifted the sunken fishing tug A.E. Clifford out of the water at the CHS 2 slip this week. You can see the tug in this view from 12/11/2018. It sank, was raised and refloated, then sank again until its retrieval this week. Edit: per Pete's image, it ended up - at least temporarily - at the Brennan yard on Rices Point in Duluth.
Dennis DeBruler: And for us out-of-towners, it is nice to see a salty getting loaded with grain.
David Schauer: Dennis DeBruler Sadly not nearly as much in 2021 as in previous years. It has been a slow for grain this year.

With the rumored end in sight for the classic laker "Ojibway", I thought I would break out my favorite photo of her. Seen here at CHS in Superior, WI in July 2006 sporting her somewhat short lived all blue hull and under the name "Voyageur Independent".
Will Gant: I question how rand can scrap so many boats without replacing them though. They have cut out what, 3 or 4 this year alone with no replacements in the pipeline.
Mike Braybrook: Will Gant Unfortunately there is excess tonnage on the lakes now because of the permanent loss of coal contracts.
Tim Walter: Will Gant uss closed the great lakes works in 2020. less demand for raw materials.
Eric Holst: Will Gant Rand's parent company is concerned about squeezing cash out of the operation short-term and maybe then selling it. They're not particularly interested in long-term prospects, nor in being the most effective shipping company they can be. You can make a lot of quick cash, or you can make a lot of sense, but it's difficult to do both.
[According to some comments, she was the last ship that sailed for Hutchinson and the last Laker built at Dafoe in Bay City.]

It appears that the two cargo bays near the stern each have their own crane whereas the other four bays share a crane. The ice on the bay is a reminder that this ship will not be able to come here again until next Spring. Loading has just begun because quite a bit of the bulb on the bow is still out of the water.

She certainly is light. No ballast at all. Seriously looks like she's aground with a low tide...

Earlier, I shared a photo by David Schauer showing the boat riding high in the water because loading had just started. Now we see most of the bow bulb is underwater.
We can see that a couple of the cranes have already been stowed in their transport position.

As the shipping season winds down we showcase the Maria G departing Duluth just after midnight with wheat loaded at CHS. Maria is the last ocean vessel movement in the Twin Ports for the 2021 season. For this year we saw 50 visits by ocean vessels, a very low number (likely the lowest in decades). 12/19/2021
Mike Cleary: Wow Dave, I knew it was slower for salties this year but I never realized it was that low.

The B.F. Jones at Farmers Union #2 in Superior in April of 1965. She looks low in the water so I'm guessing she may have been an early arrival for loading? This is the second B.F Jones (renamed from the Charles A. Paul) as the first one was wrecked and scrapped in 1956. The other boat may be the Charles S. Hebard. Photo taken from the S.S. So #1 must be on the west side and #2 is on the east side.
