Tammy Keck posted Argonne , Forest County The town was originally named Van Zile after Abraham Van Zile, who platted the area in 1888. In 1892, the town's name was changed to North Crandon. In 1929, the town's name was changed to Argonne to honor World War I veterans. The name was chosen after the French Forest of Argonne, where one of the Commerical Men's Club members' sons died. Argonne is located on the rail line from Minneapolis to Sault Ste. Marie. A line also diverges southwards at Wisconsin Junction, just west of Argonne, and goes to Neenah. Argonne is also the name of Argonne National Laboratory, which was originally called the "Metallurgical Lab". The laboratory was established to conduct research on nuclear reactors for the nation's peaceful nuclear energy program. Credit: Brian Vs Dennis Yakaites: Some of the yard is still there I worked on the Soo Line and went sent cars to Argonne on our trains. Jason Rohm: Where along the line was this building located? I was there a few months ago. I didn't see it. The tracks are out of service but still there and the yard in Argonne is overgrown but still complete like its just waiting for someone to come save '62 and start loading up forestry products again. Susan Rose: Jason Rohm torn down now. Was just east of Main Street. Stephen DuBois: Worked snow plow out of Argonne, coldest place I’ve ever been 🚂🚂 John Czerwinski shared |

Not only are the rails still in the grass, they are still in the crossing. In fact, they haven't even put an "exempt" sign on the crossbucks.
