Ringoes, NJ: 1872 BR&W/Pennsy/BR&W Depot and Train Museum

(Satellite)

BR&W = Black River & Western.

The BR&W is a Class III railroad that handles freight. "The Black River Railroad Historical Trust (BRRHT) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization which manages the public passenger trains and events on the Black River & Western Railroad." The route was built in 1854. They sometimes use their steam locomotive to handle the freight trains. [BlackRiverRailroad_about]

The tourist trains run to their Flemington Station.

The depot is peeking out between the two trees on the right.

Dennis DeBruler: This was a PRR route. The depot is now part of a tourist train operation: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uEuZuLtiwi2EBrKEA.

Evidently, when it became a tourist railroad, they went back to the original name of the route.

Metrotrails Then and Now Series: Historic circa 1964 image of the railroad station in Ringoes, New Jersey, from Black River Historic Trust Museum Collection, compared to the same scene on our 2023 visit.
The station was built in 1872 by the Pennsylvania Railroad to replace the original, smaller 1854 station built by its predecessor, the Flemington Railroad Company.
The little settlement of Ringoes boasted a mattress factory and tomato cannery on the east side of the tracks, and farm equipment dealer, feed company, and creamery on the west. The commerce warranted an enlargement of the station, which served as combination freight and passenger service, in 1890.
The Pennsylvania Railroad offered passenger service to this site until 1931, and freight until 1948.
The Black River and Western Railroad began work on the site in 1964, after attempts to begin their excursions on both the Rockaway Valley Railroad and the Chester Branch of the CNJ. BR&W beautifully restored the old station and opened their excursion line in 1965. The successful venture continues to offer superb rail tours through history to this day.
