E.m. Bell posted Derby Day 1987. The outbound KY Derby special passes by the Lawrenceburg Ky depot just before dark. I was 15 years old, with my dad standing right next to me as those F units and the awesome M5 horns they carried came flying by. He spent a lot of time watching trains with me...I would give anything to have that again. We were lucky enough to have the NS F Units in more recent times, but those green and gold FP7's are gone, as is the depot and a lot of other things, except the good memories.. Lawrenceburg Kentucky, May 1987. NS Louisville District Randall Hampton: The last of the authentic SR F units. Of the four, two currently operate in Bardstown, KY and the other two are at Stone Mountain, GA. After the NS merger, a fifth unit was donated to the museum in Spencer. So, all five of the last survivors of the 61xx series are still in running condition. |
There is only one rectangle by the tracks near the downtown, so this depot is easy to find.

This aerial confirms that there was a long freight handling section on the north side of the station.

We can still see a landscar for the track that was on the east side of the station.
