Mark Hinsdale posted Clinton IA (Chicago & North Western) James Torgeson: UP bought the Clinton, IA depot to make room for the new Mississippi River bridge, but I've lost track of where that project stands. |

Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Recently [May 2025] a fire occurred inside this now abandoned C&NW depot in Clinton, Iowa just west of the bridge over the Mississippi River. Someone wanted to see a photo of that depot. Here are two; the big one is the street side while the smaller photo is of the track side of the building. There is a rumor that the building is to be torn down to make way for a more modern rail bridge across the river. Michael Clark: UP owns the building and property now I believe. They initially planned to demo it for a new bridge. The bridge would require a larger radius and longer approach to it because of its raised height. River traffic takes priority over trains and UP doesn't like to sit and wait for the swing to close. A new bridge is planned to be higher to do away with any sort of need for a swing. At least that's what I was told. The point of contention is funding. UP wants the Army Corp of Engineers and federal money to pay the majority of it and was told, at least currently, no. I'm sure it's a complete headache especially on the transcon. They have a ton of traffic going in and out of global 2 and I've seen stack trains sitting both east and west waiting for the swing to close. I understand them wanting and needing a new bridge but they're gonna have to bite the bullet and pony up probably the majority of they money. The longer they wait the more it's gonna cost. |

Marty Bernard posted CB&Q Depot at Clinton, IA on August 12, 1964. This depot is very similar to the depots at Sandwich and Plano except for not being all brick, i.e., the stucco panels. Steven Kakoczki: HAHA! The Q gets a bigger sign. [That is when I noticed that the Rock Island also used this depot.] Marty Bernard shared |
