Rock Island had two more roundhouses west of Des Moines.
Rock Island had both the north/south and the east/west routes through this junction. UP got the north/south route and the railyard while IAIS got the east/west route.

| Tim Starr posted The Rock Island had repair shops and two roundhouses in Valley Junction (West Des Moines), but closed them in 1930. A year prior a new yard was built in East Des Moines with grand plans to add a massive 59-stall roundhouse. The Great Depression foiled those plans, so only the top half (29 stalls) were ever built. In fact, many of these buildings never made it past the planning stages. By the March 1930 issue of Rock Island Magazine, only the 8 stalls in bold had been completed. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of this roundhouse, other than satellite views. |
