Knoxville, TN: 1905 Preserved/L&N Depot

(Satellite)

Street View, Feb 2019

It was built in 1905, and the last passenger train left in 1968. It was at the north end of the 1982 World's Fair, and it was renovated to hold some restaurants and offices. "The L&N Station is now home to the L&N STEM Academy, a magnet high school which focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math. And some say it looks like Hogwarts on the inside!" [Facebook]

The structure in the left background is the World's Fair Sunsphere.

Mark Phillips: Wow! Thx. I had always wondered how it looked and where the tracks and platforms were pre Worlds' Fair.

Both the Southern and L&N stations are labeled on this topo. That makes it a lot easier to find them. The L&N passenger train railyard provided the land that was used for the 1982 World's Fair. And the land is now a park.

Linda Dan Killinger posted three photos with the comment: "Some more Knoxville station pictures, street side (11/13/1977), track side (01/28/1978) and the sign which still hangs up front (01/1980).  I always wanted to take a time exposure at night with the sign's neon lit, but never did.  😕 [Daniel Killinger]"
Charlie Poling: They auctioned the original stained glass as a fundraiser for the world's fair.
Garrett Helms: They actually made replica glass when the station was saved from the wrecking ball. One of the original windows is still in a museum in Knoxsville I believe.
