Roundhouse: (Satellite)
According to a satellite image, UP is still actively using this yard.
Tyler Scott posted Thought I'd post this picture I took last year of the remnants of the roundhouse at the UP Itasca Yard located in Superior, Wi. Dave Mikelson: It was torn down either 1999 or 2000. I went back there right before it was torn down. No one was on the property so I went in and took a bunch of photos, inside and out. (it was about 24-25 years ago so I can admit to being on the property). Part of the roof had caved in but there was a small number of artifacts inside. And yes, they were still in there when I left. A few years before (roughly 1995) while I was taken photos of the power the on-site mechanic came out to chat. Nice guy. He said they had recently brought an engine into the roundhouse so he could change out a spring. C&NW (or recently became ex-C&NW) guys were always nice and railfan friendly. It may have helped that Itasca is kind of an outpost for the railroad and a ways away from higher management. |

Because of Dave's comment about the roundhouse almost making it to the 21st Century, I fired up Global Earth. Actually, it was just a couple of stalls that were still standing.

Liam Hoffmann posted Omaha Outpost Not much goes on in the Union Pacific's Itasca Yard these days. The Union Pacific has the smallest presence of the four class ones in the Twin Ports, and the former Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha yard shows the downsizing that has occurred over the years here. Eagle eyed viewers will notice UP 6706, one of the last C&NW painted C44-9W's on UP's Roster, and the Michipicoten loading at BN Dock 5 in the distance. |
David Schauer posted Here is an aerial view of C&NW's Itasca Yard in far eastern Superior looking the opposite direction (south) from Liam's current view posted earlier. Interesting to see the changes. Superior, WI - 1989 Kent Rengo: I of course have to point out the DSS&A grade running right to left in the upper right corner where the snow can be seen. Paul Miller Jr.: CN gets more use of it than UP does. David Schauer: Paul Miller Jr. They do deliver a lot of cars to this yard. |
