Mark Llanuza posted I bought this old photo of CNW Woodstock IL station 1909 [photo collection Mark Llanuza ] |
The current depot:
Woodstock, ILBuilt 1914Still has a waiting room, but most of it is an outreach center. This depot may see more trains if Metra's plan to relocate Crystal Lake yard to Woodstock comes to fruition.1/26/25
David Bown: I just read the other day that Metra is indeed moving the yard to Woodstock.
Steve Cavaliere: This station has quite a bit of History. It was originally built without the current waiting room area. That was added on sometime in the guessing the 1920s or 30s. The library here has pictures of the station with a Model T in the parking lot. Where the handicap parking is at to the right of the image. After the addition was put on you could make out a Model A Car.
Before you pee decided to put the stations for sale on their lines they fixed this building up which is why you see the cement wainscot. The years of ice melting chemicals tickets toll on the brick and mortar at the concrete level. It was not in good shape so they decided instead of replacing the brick to fill it. Honestly this looks better and it will protect the foundation a lot better.
The library also has a picture of the circus train at the station. There's four people dressed up in circus garb that really stand out in the image with the train is a backdrop. And it really looks like there's a thousand people visiting. So more than the people that lived in Woodstock came to see it.
Fun little fact over the century when they rehab the building they had to deal with the plumbing issues. The toilets would back up every once in awhile when it was a coffee shop. They had the ground dug up with the village engineer and reps from the railroad looking down. I was walking past since I was going into the square look down and said oh that's why it backed up. Three different sizes of pipe and types of pipe.
I never heard them say anything walking away towards the theater.
They fixed it.
It's going to be a busy place this coming weekend as it's Groundhog Day Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday. We do have a lot of people that come from the city area that will take the train simply because it's literally two blocks walking. It couldn't have been in a better spot.
On a nice day with nothing on the ground meaning the s word there are still a couple of I believe 50 lb rail in the grass between the waiting platform and the parking lot. There were three main industries and they had five or six industry rails to serve them.
About the time people are downtown getting photos of the sun setting between the buildings on the Green line this rail tends to Glow in the afternoon sun both spring and fall.
The industries were Emerson and Oliver which you might remember is typewriter manufacturers. The building that had Woodstock manufacturing is still there called something else now. They still have a siding which is mostly used for mow when they have a project up in this area. The rail grinder gets parked up here once a year while it's working the line. It's right where the engine stops at for the Metra.
