Andy Zukowski posted Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad Depot in Petersburg, Illinois 1969 GM&O Acquisition: In 1947, the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad (GM&O) acquired and merged with the Alton Railroad, which extended the GM&O's system into Chicago and included the line through Petersburg. • Later Mergers: The GM&O itself later merged with the Illinois Central Railroad in 1972 to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. Robert Chitwood: Standard Alton depot design. [A comment confirms that the agent and his family lived in the second story.] Dave Sanders: Was that outside of town near the river? Stan L. Maddox: Dave Sanders Northeast corner of town, right next to the Ideal plant. Standing in the bay window of the depot, the Sangamon River was in sight. But the tracks curved in a gradual S to the north before curving back east, with a trestle approach before reaching the bridge proper. |

Mark Fuller commented on Andy's post Here’s the orientation of the bridge remains to Petersburg. The blue line is what I believe was the old RoW. |
The depot was even with the south part of the meander. The river and roads have changed a lot. Fortunately, there is still an oxbow lake that we can use to correlate 1939 with today.

The GM&O was the diagonal route that went from the southwest to the northeast. I think the black rectangle west of the track near the top marks the depot. Note the contour lines behind the depot agree with the hill in the photo at the top of these notes.
