Cambridge, IA: Junction Tower: UP/Rock Island/SP&KCS vs. Aban/C&NW/FDDM&S + Aban/Milwaukee

(Satellite)

Railroad names according to at 1913 topo map:
SP&KCS = St. Paul & Kansas City Shortline
FDDM&S = Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern (John called this one the Newton & Northwestern)

John Harker posted three images with the comment: "The CM&StP Cambridge, Iowa interlocking tower was photographed in March 1915.  The tower operators were standing on the stairs.  This tower was located at the southwest corner of the diamond where the St. Paul & Kansas City Short Line (Rock Island) crossed the CM&StP on the southeast side of town.  Also, the Newton & Northwestern had crossed near here as well, but had been abandoned by the date.  This view looks to the northeast with the original CM&StP main line just to the left or north of the tower.  You should be able to see the new fill of the realignment and double track in the background.  Also, a partial view of the short line bridge and east abutment can be seen above the stairs to the left.  Shortly after this photo was taken, the new CM&StP alignment was opened and the tower was dismantled.  Attached for reference is a 1913 topo map segment showing the tower’s location and a 1973 track chart showing the updated track alignment.  John Harker image editing, research and collection"
