Dayton, TN: 1800s Dayton Coal and Iron Foundry

(Satellite, "where the Delaware Ave sports comples is today")

Scene in Rhea County posted
The Dayton Coal and Iron Foundry was located where the Delaware Ave sports complex is today (late 1800s). This rare photo from the Lone Mountain side shows some of the housing for company employees and miners.
Todd Atkins: Some of the railroad tracks and the "slag pit" pond still exists

Thanks to Jacob Foster Ellis for sharing this great postcard from his collection.

In this enhanced crop you can see people gathered at doorways, children playing, a couple on the porch with a black cat, laundry hung out, cows in the field, a railway bridge and a bit of downtown Dayton.

I presume this is the slag pit pond and remnant railroad tracks that Todd mentioned.

It was gone by the oldest available topo map. The railroad was the Southern, and, of course, it is now owned by Norfolk Southern.
