I saw this photo today. Most people who see it are most likely checking out the train. Then their eyes goes to the well maintained depot.
What catches mine is the material pile and the ties. Most of the rail looks like scrap.
The ties I see look like they have been saved. They are used, but still have some life in them.
I see the track is welded rail, but it looks like it is due for an upgrade by the rail laying in place.
The sky looks like it would be a favorable day to work. Not real hot and not cold.
When I see the rail pile it reminds me when it comes time to take inventory this pile of rail will take more work unless it is all marked as scrap. If it is scrap a better place would be away from the mainline.
Ryan Woods: Please credit me if you are going to use my photo.
Gary P. Price: Good observation, the material on the right was from a switch, siding and crossing that was recently removed.
The CWR is currently being replaced on both sides from Glade Spring to Wytheville and guess what? NS only sent a single side RailGang to do both sides.
The Rural Retreat depot was built by NS predecessor Virginia and Tennessee in 1855 and a few years back was meticulously restored and houses a museum and meeting hall. It is also featured in O Winston Link’s famous Christmas Eve 1957 photo.
David Robey: What you see is yes welded rail to be used on the main but your read on the other track materials is slightly off.
The frog and the other rail that is neatly staged is a roadmasters oh shit or I'll need this someday pile. The ties in foreground actually look new and as for the older ties they are probably also something that the road Master has on on hand just in case.
Track materials are expensive and getting stuff in a timely manner isn't always possible so any good roadmasters has a stash.
I would be willing to bet he has his eyes on sections of the old CWR of because now he would have Sperry testrail for spots that may need a quick fix.
Just because it looks like scrap doesn't mean it is.
