Riverside, IL: Metra/CB&Q Depot

(Satellite)

Street View, Nov 2019

I don't normally do commuter stations because there are so many of them in Chicagoland, but the comments on this post made it worth noting.

Bob Kalal uploaded three photos with the comment: "1911, train derailment took out part of the old station."

On August 19, 1911 an eastbound Chicago Burlington & Quincy freight train missed a visual signal and crashed into the rear car of a commuter train at the CB&Q depot in Riverside, Illinois. Fortunately no one was killed in this accident. But one of the passenger cars jumped the tracks and crashed into the station, causing the roof to collapse.

Bob Tita: The roof and sign appear to be on the station today.

Flickr has another photo of the damaged depot, but someone slapped a copyright on an uncopyrighted photo.

The article explained that back in 1911 about a third of the commuter trains terminated in Riverside. There was a small yard west of the station and south of the tracks. By 1938, the tracks had been removed from that yard, and it was used for storage. Today, that land is a swim club and commuter parking.
