Continuing northwest along the Missouri Pacific route that was originally the “Wichita - Colorado” line that connected with the “Pueblo Division” near Geneseo, we come to Haven in eastern Reno County Kansas.  I understand this route was known as the “Hutchinson Sub” of the MOP before it was turned over to the Kansas & Oklahoma (K&O) shortline. Chalmers & Borton built the first 100,000 bushel concrete elevator for the Haven Farmers Cooperative in 1940.  The 200,000 bushel annex to that elevator was built in 1948 by C & B.  Chalmers & Borton built the second larger elevator, with a capacity of 150,000 bushels, in 1951.  This elevator is interesting in that there are windows about half of the way up for a room with grain cleaning equipment. The last 400,000 bushel annex was built in 1959 to meet the need for additional capacity for storing government surplus grain.  The layout demonstrates that sometimes the engineers had to be creative to fit the elevator onto the available site.  Haven was acquired by, or merged with, MKC (Mid Kansas Co-op) based in Moundridge in the early 2000’s, and is now a full service branch location of MKC.  The well maintained iron clad wood elevator was an independent named “Tonn Grain” as I recall some fifty years ago.  Photographed 2020.

Full service includes fertilizer supply. It looks like the farms use some dry fertilizer and lots of liquid fertilizer. I don't remember seeing such a large tank farm for fertilizer.

The shortline Kansas & Oklahoma (K&O) supplies cuts of tank cars.

I'm surprised the K&O doesn't serve the grain elevator. But there is no fall protector and the crossing for the siding is exempt.
