Westinghouse: (Satellite, today [Nov 2024], it is literally brown land.)
Railyard: (Satellite, according to the 1903 topo map, the railyard went all through town and extended on both sides of the town. Quite a bit of it still existed in 1964, but it is all gone now.)
It appears that the roundhouse was next to 2nd Avenue and northeast of Hays Street.
The roundhouse was gone by 1964; but Y Street was added, 1st Avenue was extended, and the Westinghouse plant was built by 1964.

Jackson-Township historical preservation posted Train traveling on the Pennsylvania Railroad past the Westinghouse Plant in Derry, Westmoreland County. This photo was taken by Ivan S. Abrams in the mid-1970s. (Photo shared from Ray Washlaski via https://www.facebook.com/groups/146322355378061/) [Several comments point out that the steam train was an excursion train.] Patrick Boyle: What did that particular plant make? Debbie Palmer: Patrick Boyle insulators - at the time it was the largest insulator plant in the U.S. Jim Weimer: That plant produced porcelain insulators for electric poles and generators. Plant sold to ici in mid 80s and closed mid 90s. Derry Area Historical Society Official shared David Filicko: I probably got smoked by this train as a youngster going to either the post office every day in Bradenville from Snydertown or to get a haircut from Mr. Tutoki’s barber shop. We crossed the railroad tracks via a huge crossing bridge up near the coke ovens. One time we saw the smoke from the train engine billowing really strongly but didn’t realize how dangerous it would be to get caught into it. We had to run like crazy to get off that bridge as the hot cinder filled with red hot cinders black smoke hit the underside of the bridge and followed it outwards virtually chasing after us like a dragons’s flaming breath. I do believe that we would possibly have been overcome and died of asphyxiation. It was nightmarish. We were terrified. We learned a lesson. (And, I was almost killed about six or seven other times as I grew up in Western Pennsylvania). |
