Elburn Metra Yard A view of the Elburn, Illinois Metra Station and yard facilities. Built on the former Chicago and North Western line, now Union Pacific, the newly built yard is impressive. The photo is a little dated as the road bridge is competed and a housing development is going up adjacent to the station. |
Looking east to catch the electrical hookup boxes.
The satellite must have taken this image on a weekend. As you can see above, the trains are normally downtown during daylight during the weekdays. This yard be a new terminus for the
UP West (UP-W) line. Now I wonder where did it use to terminate? I don't know how to access old timetables.

I think they ran them back east to a coach yard just east of Powis Rd. in West Chicago. Today on Google Maps satellite view, from north to south, there is auto facility, that yard, three mainline tracks, and more autos.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Earth Pro (a free download to a desktop) shows that yard half-full on Friday April 16, 1993 (marked "3/1994" for whatever reason). They look like "scoots" (C&NW term for "dinks") to me, although some locos seem missing. There is a bridge N/S over that yard, maybe fuel/sand? That bridge is there in 2005, it's over freight cars in 2006, and gone in 2007. Elburn opened on 23 January 2006.
