R W Ferge captured train #10-4 the Copper Country Limited at the Calumet, Michigan depot in August 1967. Its scheduled departure time was 5:00 pm for the overnight run to Chicago. FP7 102-A was in charge of this evening's train. The SOO Line operated the train from Calumet to Champion and the Milw from Champion to Milwaukee. The sleeper was transferred to #4 the Pioneer Limited and other cars to #24 the Traveler to Chicago. I scanned and edited this image from an original Kodachrome slide in my collection.

Both train and tracks all gone.

The geographically north end of the route was already abandoned in 1947.

The railroad was originally the Mineral Range and then the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic. The DSS&A built this depot in 1908 to replace an 1873 depot. It remained in use until the last train left in Mar 1968. During its heyday, it saw five passenger trains a day.

According to the 2005 SPV Map, this town was surrounded by mines.

Roundhouse

Steve Horton posted three photos with the comment:
Question:  Is CN still hauling Minnesota-mined ore to Louisiana? If so is it for local use (Nucor's DRI plant) and/or for export?
The photos obviously have absolutely nothing to do with the above question.  Just sharing some April 1983 photos of Calumet and Hecla's roundhouse in Calumet.  The roundhouse still exists, but the open area where the turntable was once located is now enclosed.  Used by Calumet Electronics I think.
David Schauer: Yes, CN is running taconite trains to Convent in Louisiana for export to Europe. I believe there are two trains in this service.
Ken Burbey: There are definitely two very distinct train sets. They go through Burlington Wisconsin every few days. It doesn't appear that they even move the engines around for the return trip north as many times there are two DPU's at the rear end. One of the car sets is aluminum colored and the other is slightly different. My opinions only
Stan Capan: What plant is supplying the taconite?
Rich Pedersen: Stan Capan Minntac

Some of the exterior wall is still visible.

When you know it was a roundhouse, the original roof line is east to spot.

Calumet & Hecla is not in any of my merger diagrams. Looking at some topo maps, It was either abandoned or it became part of the SOO.
