Superior, WI: Great Northern (GN) Belknap Street Roundhouse and 28th Street Yard

(Satellite, you can see segments of the foundation for the curved outer wall.)

A view of BN's Belknap Street engine facility around 1990. Lots of SD40-2s and GP38-2s, even a Conrail unit for good measure. Not a GE to be seen. Neat with some blue Rock Island grain hoppers, too. Superior, WI - Circa 1990
Cody White: So much to see here. A snow dozer, Jordan Spreader and a GSC bulkhead flat for good measure. This really shows how much Manions has expanded and dressed up their property.

Our weekly banner change is this image of the BN roundhouse in Superior during 1976 by Rob Kitchen. Keep your current and old shots coming as we swap out our group shot every Sunday.
Dennis DeBruler: Was this the roundhouse at Belknap?
David Schauer: Dennis DeBruler Yes.
Greg Markey: LOVE the difference in Cascade Green

A collection of former Great Northern power congregates at Belknap Roundhouse in Superior May 1973. The lineup here includes SD9 6110 and SD7 6019 on the left and GP5 1350 and another SD9 on the right. The 6110 and the other SD9 are both wearing cascade green paint while the 1350 and 6019 won't get green until 1977 and late 1976 respectively. These tracks around the turntable were known as the Dirt House tracks. This portion of the roundhouse was covered until 1951 or so but always had a dirt floor instead of concrete. The two Bike tracks are located in front of the power here. The turntable at Belknap was 120ft long and the longest combination of power that would fit on it were two SD7/9s. For being painted in January 1972, the 6110 looks surprisingly clean like it was painted just a few months ago. Unknown Photographer Kodachrome from my Collection.

It looks like the Belknap Engine engine facility had a lot of backshop work as well.

I got the 28th Street Yard name from this map.

The next day, I found this confirmation about the name for the 28th Street Yard.

A complement to the engine facility shot is this one that shows BN's large yard complex, including the "new yard" at 28th Street built in 1983-84 to replace Bridge Yard (plus a new yard office, just recently replaced). Superior, WI - Circa 1990
David Szymanski: Who's yard was that on the left, looks pretty worn out
David Schauer: David Szymanski NP mostly and LST&T had its yard north of there.
Tom Meddaugh: The outline of a roundhouse is visible, when was it torn down I wonder ?
Cody White: Tom Meddaugh September 1986
David Schauer: Cody White Can you label all the various yard segments? I know the 60 Yard is there, but you know the other segments.
Cody White: I'm not sure I got it figured out either but I'll try. I think the 40 yard is the easternmost of the Belknap yards. The 60 Yard is closest to 28th St. and the bulk of the cars here are in the Outgoing Yard. The switching lead for the Outgoing Yard parallelled Elmira Ave much of the way. The 40 Yard and Outgoing Yards went under Belknap St. As you stated, the NP yard is grown over in the center left of the photo. The Terminal's yard was farther north and removed in 1987 I think. The yard at 28th St. was just a storage yard for much of its existence but was added on to when Bridge Yard closed in Duluth, I'm thinking as a new interchange point for the DWP and BN. The yard office at 17th St. was closed in 1983 and the new office opened at 28th St. at the same time. I'm open to corrections on any of this.
Dominic Sosnowski: Cody White what go mean ## yard? # of cars it can hold 1 track?
Cody White: Dominic Sosnowski It was track numbers. 40 yard was tracks numbered 40, 41, 42...etc. The 60 Yard was tracks numbered 60,61,62...etc.
Ty Webb: David Schauer Top of pic to the far left is the New Yard. Tracks 25-34. Far-right is Old Yard. Track 1-24. Across 28th Street to the left is the 60 Yard. The middle is the Incoming and the right is the Outgoing.

You can see the remains of a roundhouse on the right.
