L&N No. 34 - New Orleans - 5 Jun 1947
Louisville & Nashville train 34 – the northbound PIEDMONT – was preparing to leave New Orleans for New York City. The locomotives were E6A units 776 and 756; they had recently been renumbered from 456B and 456A but were still operating as a matched pair. At the other end of the station was a pedestrian overpass which ran from the end of the Canal Street streetcar line to the Mississippi River ferry boat landing on the left. It passed over the tracks of the L&N, Southern Pacific and New Orleans Public Belt. In 1950 the station was the site of the opening scene of the move A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. (Photo: Elliott M. This is the actual color scheme of that locomotive.
Jim Strong: They called this the Pine Tree Scheme, only used on E6's.

L&N reached New Orleans in 1881 by building its tracks to Mobile, AL, and buying a railroad from Mobile to New Orleans. [lnrr]
The railroad was the New Orleans, Mobile & Texas Railraod. [msrailroads]

This map also documents the ferry service and shows the depot.

I started with a 1964 aerial because it had higher resolution. But the station was already gone!

So I downloaded the only older photo that was available. It does show the station.

I learned later in my research that this was one of five stations that were replaced by the Union Station in 1954. That is why this depot was removed in 1954. This is a map of those five stations.

The Canal Street Ferry service still exists.
