Tim Swaren 1:07 video @ 0:56 Feb. 11, 2024. Video of the last dragline operating in Alberta at the moment! Marion 8750 at Genesee Mine, with a 420 ft. boom. Carl Gilmore: The last one??? That's sad Tim Swaren: Carl Gilmore Yes, all draglines at the Paintearth, Sheerness, and Highvale Mines are shut down. Chase Janus: Tim Swaren I know they tore down paintearths draglines and highvales mostly intact how about sheerness? Tim Swaren: Chase Janus The 1300W is scrapped, the Page 736 went down to Illinois to work in a quarry. Kyle McCracken: What about the Obed mine? And Coal Valley mine? Are they scrapped now too? Tim Swaren: Kyle McCracken The Page 757 at Obed is scrapped. The Page 752 at Coal Valley is parked but I don't know if it's been scrapped ...yet. power-eng Units 1 and 2 were augmented with natural-cycle combined cycle units. New turbine gas-exhaust steam generators replace the coal boilers. And the gas turbines that create that exhaust provides more power. The turbines are hydrogen ready. |
Units 1 and 2 entered service in 1989. "We’re developing a battery energy storage system (“BESS”) at the Genesee Generating Station to ensure capacity from the repowered Genesee 1 and 2 units will be available to serve Alberta in circumstances when it might otherwise be constrained due to current transmission system restrictions. Pending regulatory approval, the BESS will be used to store, and later deploy, up to 210 MW of energy, using lithium-ion batteries." They are also talking about adding carbon capture and sequestration. [cpower] They should have specified a megawatt-hour figure for the battery storage.
The plant will also produce carbon nanotubes. [GlobalNews]
