Dennis DeBruler commented on Larry's post The State Hospital RR that does street running through South Elgin remined me that the IC used to interconnect with an interurban railroad. This remnant of the interurban was retained to provide coal cars to the state hospital. https://towns-and-nature.blogspot.com/2018/01/elgin-il-mental-health-centers-heating.html The map indicates that the depot was still standing. 1949 Geneva Quad @ 24,000 Joseph Hazinski: Dennis DeBruler IC Type B depot was constructed in 1942 and removed in 1955. The interchange railroad was actually the Aurora Elgin and Fox River Electric Co, in 1949. The cartographer got the name wrong. Dennis DeBruler: Joseph Hazinski That would have been the name before the interurban went bankrupt. I presume the State Hospital RR was formed after bankruptcy to retain this track segment between the IC and the state hospital to continue delivery of coal cars to their heating plant. Joseph Hazinski: Dennis DeBruler Not true. It was always the Aurora Elgin and Fox River Electric Company after AE&C bankruptcy (which led to the CA&E). The corporate entity is now owned by the Fox River Trolley Association, Inc. The company also had other customers, most notably the Kerber Packing Company. The bus lines were spun off to National City Lines, then the municipalities and finally into today's PACE divisions so passenger service has never been abandoned as just the mode and ownership was changed. The power plant provides both steam and electricity to the mental health campus and was converted to natural gas in 1971. It is planned to replace the plant with a new one in 2025. |
