From the Alan K. House collection.
Jim Strong: These cabs were originally gray, FRA said they didn't show up too good,so they were later painted red.Looks like a U23B with it.

Given the grain elevator in the background, I think he is standing in front of the depot rather than at the L&N vs. C&EI junction. 1958 aerial photo [AR1VPJ000030091]

Many times you can get a clue as to the location of an old grain elevator by looking for a bigger elevator in the town. But not in this case because the old elevator is landlocked and because Consolidated Grain and Barge has built a big transloading operation east of town. This is part of a larger rail-to-barge complex.

The L&N depot in Mt Vernon, IN caught fire and had considerable damage. Alan House had just got home from his shift working at the depot when he received a call about the fire. It was a shock. The last photo shows the depot demolished in July 1978.

BrĂan S Du Bois: Dad was working the first trick SD Dispatcher’s desk that day. There had been issues with the electricity earlier in the day. The Road Electrician had been called to go to MI and check the wiring in the depot. Unfortunately, the fire broke out prior to his arrival.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Depot at MI several times as a kid. My Dad worked there while he was an Operator. My Maternal Grandfather, Hoyt Craw Youngs, also worked there. It would have been nice to have gone by the depot as a Brakeman and Engineer.

Nathan Day: Definitely wasn’t expecting a GN BN patched caboose!
Mark Rickert: Nathan Day interesting part to me is the high number of BN locomotives and Cabooses on the parallel southern line and a good number of oversized loads on the line. Perhaps a detour for a BN/or southern train.
