Alton, IL: Jun 26, 2024: Big Sinkhole in Park's Soccer Fields

(Satellite, the middle light pole disappeared into the hole.)

No one was injured.

Lisa Ruble posted five photos with the comment:

This estimated 100' [30m] wide, 30' [9m] deep sinkhole happened today, June 26, at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.

[I  wondered if it was a limestone cave or an underground coal mine. Actually, it was neither. It was a rock quarry tunnel.]

Allen L Austin: rock quarry tunnel.

Sher N Tim: quarry has claimed responsibility for that area under there.

"It stretches from the 30-yard line to the 30-yard line using the football field as a reference and is said to be around 50-foot deep."
[So that would be 180' (55m) across and 50' (15m) deep.]
"Michael Haines, with the City of Alton Parks and Recreation Department says the hole began opening up in the early morning hours and it was caused by a mine collapse deep underground. 'I think it started around 6:30 a.m. this morning at the surface, it gave entirely way around 8:30 a.m,' said Haines."
