Good morning! Today's picture takes us to St. Francis Township and the Village of Montrose.
This is a real picture postcard of Montrose. At the bottom it says "EAST FROM DEPOT MONTROSE, ILL". I believe this postcard to be circa 1900 to 1910.
The depot is on the right. Depending on the date this would have been the depot for the Vandalia Railroad. In later the railroad would have been the Pennsylvania Railroad. There has not been passenger service on this railroad line since probably the early 1970s. The tall two-story white building in the middle of the postcard is the town hall. On the left side of the postcard is Meislahn Store. It was owned and operated by the Meislahn family from 1898 to 1928. It later became Bishop's store.
The store and Meislahn home are no longer standing. They were torn down not too long ago. The depot and the town hall are gone also. Of couse, these buildings were located along the National Road. The National Road brought many settlers to our area.
Please share with us if you recognize any more of the buildings shown in the postcard. I’m always looking for more photos from this area so feel free to share any that you may have.
Wherever you may be, I wish you a wonderful day!
