Marty Bernard posted The caboose of: Gulf Mobile & Ohio F3A #809A leads a freight slowly past the Springfield, IL depot on the warm afternoon of August 15, 1965. Jon Roma: This diamond was just north of the GM&O's passenger station. The image is interesting in that this crossing is not captured in pictures very often: In fact, this is the first color photo I've seen of this spot. This was the crossing of the GM&O with the B&O's line from Flora to Beardstown, IL. Part of the trackage in Springfield was joint with the IC, who used some of the trackage to access their station at 5th and Madison. All IC passenger trains serving Springfield had to back in from Avenue interlocking on the east side of town. I've forgotten where IC joint ownership ended. |
