Tom Cockle: These machines were the reason that Santa Fe’s safety-minded “reversed hatches” were changed to the somewhat less safe standard, flat-lying hatches. It was easier to move the icing machines along if the hatches laid down flat, but this meant that now workers dealing with opening and closing the hatches were closer to the car ends.
