Joe Holman posted On This Date, Fifty Years Ago Today, August 27, 1974, Ripon WI -- CNW operations at Ripon were in their last years when I found the thrice-weekly wayfreight stopped at the stately brick station with the crew apparently gone to beans. The eastbound train was on the last leg of a two-day turnaround trip from where the line was still in service at West Bancroft WI. I don't know who the man is sitting in front of the depot, but best guess is one of the crew of Extra 1576 East. Note the orderboard still in use. Today this site has been redeveloped, but a short piece of the railroad's onetime corridor remains on the east side of town. Joe Holman photo. |
This topo map did not mark the location of the depot. C&NW was the east/west route. The north/south route was the Milwaukee.
